Help Restore The Land – Matapouri – Sunday Nov 13th 9am to 1pm

Josh and Jo have a 15ha block in Saqa Way, Matapouri on the beautiful Tutukaka Coast, they are committed to restoring the land back to native forest and need help to remove wilding pines. We will put on a sausage sizzle (meat and plant based) to follow as a thank you!

We will meet on the grassed area opposite Kukupa Place on Matapouri Road (in between the two bridges) at 9am..with the plan to have everyone onsite by 9:30 and finish up at 12:30 with a sausage sizzle ..for those that need to get away we will start ferrying people back at this point.

No training is required however you will need to be reasonably sure on your feet and mind your back while pulling out the pines (they are around 40cm tall on average). The land is relatively steep, there is some debris left from the pine harvest but not huge obstacles and vegetation is coming through.

We will be pulling small pines out by hand so bring gloves, sturdy footwear, weather protection, water to stay hydrated and a snack for morning tea…along with any personal medication you may need (allergies etc). We will have some gloves to borrow and a general first aid kit will be on site.

There are no toilets on site but they are only 8 mins away in Matapouri and we can do a loo run if needed half way through. We will be carpooling/ferrying with a 4wd from Matapouri as the roads are steep gravel windy roads. Let us know if you have your own gnarly transport to get there, parking and turning isnt a problem!

Contact Wendy on 022 526 1972 to RSVP, we need at least 10 people for the event to go ahead and would love 50!

Learn more about Josh, Jo and Wolfie in there bio here…

Josh Jo and Wolfie have recently purchased 15 hectares of cut over pine behind Matapouri bay. They are in the process of regenerating it back into native bush, with a passion for pest control and returning the land back to environmental harmony not only bush wise but also with bird life. The land has significant and well established very diverse native bush surrounding us on 3 boundaries with many local kiwi to be heard at night.  Our dream is to help return our land back to the way it was in its natural state while trying to minimise our own impact on the land.
Josh comes from a rural background in the Waikato, having spent a good time on farmland. Both Josh and Jo have had lengthy careers in the emergency medicine industry Josh as an ambulance officer and Jo as an emergency paediatric nurse. Josh will be continuing to work as an ambulance officer based in Whangarei while Jo will be a stay home mum for Wolfie and another baby due in January.
They are very passionate outdoors people, tramping, climbing, free diving, fishing and boating. Wolfie did his first multi day great walk at the age of 5 months, so is definitely following in Mum and Dads outdoor footsteps.
In school holidays our blended family swells to include two teenage girls who also love the outdoor lifestyle.
The land has had a bit of a head start on us when we purchased it as far as weeds and wild pines. We are getting on top of the pines having removed approximately 10,000 with maybe another 20,000 more to remove.  This is a big task and we are really struggling to get on top of the other weeds that are going to cause issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated by both us and the land.
