Nan Pullman and Mike Camm have continued to keep a regular check on the three Tutukaka Coast kiwis and this is Nan’s recent update…
Over the winter the three kiwi chicks – Milo, Komarohi and Kicker – released at Tawapou last year have settled into their own territories.
Kicker is regularly heard calling out near his release site on Tawapou Farm, very close to where we found him when we checked his transmitter. His transmitter tells us he is not sitting on a nest and is still quite actively feeding.
Milo‘s territory stretches between North Gable Way and Middle Ridge but he has now moved back down the valley below North Gable and, very excitingly, we discovered that he is sitting on a nest and has been for about 38 days. Male kiwi sit for about 80 days so we will be keeping a close eye on his progress and any sign of chicks near the end of October.
Komarohi – the great walker – seems to favour the forestry area up beyond the Tutukaka Quarry, but his transmitter is telling us he is not sitting on a nest and still quite active.
