October Weed Action Events are as follows:

Events Postponed (wait for more settled weather to be rescheduled)

  • Pacific Bay, Ginger Mission – 10am- noon we’ve cleared a path in to the ginger in the council gully and need a team to help cut n paste the ginger both here and some on private land next door. Meet at the pond just as the road levels out (opposite no 23 or 25). Update/Postponed til further notice.

Coming up

What to wear sturdy shoes, long clothes, weather protection

What to bring  gardening gloves and hand tools if you have them (or you can borrow them from our kit) , bring your own allergy medication (we have a basic first aid kit).

Here’s some photos of the last mission in Pacific Bay, the good, the bad and the ugly (not the people the plants!).

  • Cutting down Ivy
Pacific Bay weed busters removing the english ivy from the council block.
  • English Ivy - a well established vine
The english ivy was well established in the council block on Pacific Bay Road. Volunteers worked to cut through thick trunks that wound their way around native forest trees.
  • Coastal Morning Glory - Ipomoea cairica
Coastal Morning Glory - Ipomoea cairica | although a native the coastal morning glory can behave like a plant pest . Here in Pacific Bay it has collapsed 4m Manuka from its shear weight as the vine smothers the margins!
  • Pacific Bay – battle ground – Ginger and Tradescantia
Pacific Bay - battle ground - Ginger and Tradescantia
  • Turepo - Small leaved Milk Tree - Streblus Heterophyllus
another gem in Pacific bay thats worth fighting the weeds for - Turepo | Small leaved Milk Tree - Streblus Heterophyllus relatively uncommon in these parts. Notice the galls? a wee mite causes the plant to hypertrophy or grow big.
  • Manakura - Melicytus micranthus
Pacifc Bay has got some gems (trying to balance out all those photos of weeds!) this is one Manakura - Melicytus micranthus, this juvenile was at the food of a more mature specimen - well spotted Skip!
  • Pacific Bay, path cleared by Weed Busters
Access was poor into the gully so weed busters cleared a path ready for the next sunny period to tackle the wild ginger.
